Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs)

The term NGO originated from the United Nations (UN), and is normally used to refer to organizations that are not part of the government and are not conventional for-profit business.  In the cases in which NGOs are funded totally or partially by governments, the NGO maintains its non-governmental status by excluding government representatives from membership in the organization.  There are also numerous classifications of NGOs.  The typology the World Bank uses divides them into”Operational” and “Advocacy” NGOs.

Operational NGOs seek to achieve small scale change directly through projects. They mobilize financial resources, materials, and volunteers to create localized programs in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy.  The defining activity of operational NGOs is implementing projects.
 
Advocacy NGOs seek to achieve large scale change promoted indirectly through influence of the political system.  As opposed to operational NGOs that develop projects, these organizations typically try to raise awareness, acceptance, and knowledge by lobbying, presswork and activist events.
